For the 400,000 diagnosed Canadians living with celiac disease, gluten-free food is the only medicine to help prevent, manage and treat their condition. The inability for those with celiac to access a gluten free diet can lead to serious health complications including seizures, anemia, multiple sclerosis, osteoperosis, type 1 diabetes, and cancer.
This election, I am joining Celiac Canada in calling on federal politicians to implement tax reform for gluten free affordability. We are calling on the next federal government to provide a flat tax medical claim of at least $1,000 per adult and $600 per child to offset the costs of gluten-free food, our only medication.
This is critical because the medically required gluten-free diet can cost 150% to 500% more than regular food items. Between the ongoing cost of living pressures, and increased cost on food due to tariffs, this food is becoming increasingly unavailable for Canadians with celiac.
I am joining Celiac Canada in sending a letter of support for Celiac Canada's advocacy to all of the federal party leaders and encourage you to take 30 seconds out of your day to do the same.
I am also forwarding a copy of the letter to each of the federal candidates for the major parties in my hometown of London, Ontario asking them to commit to supporting this important tax reform. To help inform Londoners about where local candidates stand on their support for Canadians with celiac disease, I will update this page to include their responses.
Please consider sending a copy of the letter to your local candidates as well, and take the time to learn more about Celiac Canada's advocacy.
This page has been updated to indicate which respondents were successfully elected. With the election over, this page will not be updated further, but will be kept online as a record of candidates' support.
